Went back to Wynwood with Hemi's mom to look at some more graffiti. I didn't see any of the art work from last time, I'm guessing the walls get redone every couple of months. We didn't see anyone spray painting, but there were some photographers taking pictures of models in front of one of the walls.

I love the flying insect/boat thing.

Art Walk in Wynwood. Jan/14/2012

Every second Saturday in Miami there is an art walk in the Wynwood neighborhood. Hemi's mom and I went this last weekend. This is in a hood which is kinda sketchy, but ironically I feel way safer here on this weekend night, than during the day. The artwalk is when the art galleries open up their doors at night for free public viewing(free in Miami??).

You drive in, park on a side street for free (free parking in Miami??) and just walk up the street, going into any art shows that are open. There were tons of people walking the streets, and hemi's mom and I even saw the artist who draws the Emily Strange things. Some of the art is cool, and of course the graffitti is always interesting. There are DJ's jammin outside (heard Dubstep at Panther coffee...gross...), food trucks all set up in one area, and plenty of art. Worth the trip yo!

Usually, most of the cool things people talk about to do in Miami, are actually not in Miami. Most likely they are talking about the city of Miami Beach, the Florida keys, or some place else which is in South florida, but not in Miami proper. Art walk was the first cool thing I've done, in the actual city of Miami.

Today a part of me died.

I was listening to a song by the blues traveler named "hook." I loved this song back in the day in my teens years. Ok, first off, he does not say 'the heart brings you back'...he instead says 'the hook brings you back.' Hunting this song down in the youtube search, I thought the name was kind of weird; I should of stopped there...

So I pulled up the song on youtube, oddly named Hook. It starts playing and I can't help but follow the lyrics (what I thought was a love song)....Wait! Oh no!! This song is about nothing on what I thought it was about. Noooo!

I've been thinking a while now, that I should get some cool looking Riddick sunglasses. Just take a look at the picture above and just imagine how cool I'd be in these sunglasses. Super cool!

Wednesday evening my sister arrived into South Florida. We took her to Islmarado Fish restaurant, when she was perplexed that the menu included "Dolphin." She ate Alligator. After that she mostly chilled on the couch at the apt while watching batman and Forgetting Sara marshall.

In the morning, Hemi's mom got up really early so that she could drop me off at work and take the car around so chickenrice would not be bored. I heard they went to the train restaurant, the shops at Bal Harbour and then Aventura mall. After my work, we then went to Boat Sushi, walked through main street in Miami lakes, skyped with cousins over a broken coffee mug and then watched "the Cove."

Friday was beach day. First we ate Dim Sum then drove to Miami beach. Chilled at the beach, though there was not enough wind for kites. Water was cold. After that we biked around the beach for a bit, even attempted the sand. Dropped bikes off, dropped beach gear off then walked down Lincoln road. After that nonsense we drove back to the apt. Brief rest then went to find Egyptian Movie place. Could not find. Finally found. Saw bunny, ate a McD's then went back to watch new Sherlock Holmes movie. The movie was a interrupted by a power failure. Missed major plot points but did finish movie. Saw bunny again. Drove back, zz.

I was at this fancy mall in South Florida called Aventura the other day and came across a bubble tea joint. It is named Boba. Their thing is bubbles that are filled with flavor. They pop, similar to fish eggs, in your mouth and are filled with fruit flavor. Actually I'm not a fan of fish eggs, nor weird balls filled with juice.

Exciting times will soon be arriving. Hemi's mom (who for some reason went to Toronto, leaving me inexplicable alone for over a month) will be coming back to Miami in the beginning of December.

Now don't listen to those fools who say 'absence makes the heart grow fonder.' I think the first person to said that had no friends or loved ones; the second person to say that was trying to find an excuse to leave, so she could go cuddle with someone else; and the third person was just looking to go skiing in Toronto, but was too embarrased to ski with me, since she did not learn to ski on the swiss alps at the age of 8.

To both the first and second person I say what Justin Timberlake would say. "Cry me a river." Absence just be taking time away from me, which is never good. To the third person I would say what Cibbo Matto would say. "i know your chicken."

So far November has been kind to me. The tshirt I bought finally came in. Yes transformers themed. Also, last week I bought a PS3. I've been playing with it a bit and yes, it is an impressive toy. It streams movies too? Whoa. It plays youtube vids? Whoa. So I've been doing a bit of gaming too now. Wow, look at them now...Impressive. Overall I'm pleased with this gift to myself.

In other news, Hemi's mom is still away in Toronto. I'm not really sure why she wanted to leave me to go play up north, but as you can see by the pictures, Hemi has been quite naughty with his mom away. (In the picture he is trying to cook, but totally messes turning over the omelet.) I bought him some new food, which he loved but his stomach didn't, so he was throwing up every other day. Gross. Eventually I bought some science diet (made from real scientists) and then he stopped throwing up everywhere.

Lately I've been really infatuated with a cell phone. The HP Pre 3; never released officially but verizon wireless and ATandT models exist on ebay. I got really interested in this phone when I started hearing buzz on the WebOS it runs on the phone. It was getting a lot of hype and some were saying it was the best operating system for phones ever. (Ever ever?) Well, right before the release, HP decides to quit the cell phone market, and it canceled the phones release in the US. I've been watching the verizon wireless versions on Ebay a lot now. Sigh, if only I had infinite income.

That's all she wrote for today. My dad wrote me on Saturday reminding me to remember remember the 5th of November. Peace out ya'll.

I have a slight annoyance with work. Currently, I'm the youngest person in my lab group, and also one of the more inexperienced chemist to the kind of analysis we do. Somehow though, it seems that I am the only chemist who knows how to do the plumbing of gas cylinders to regulators, to copper tubing and then into instruments. (That or I'm the only chemist willing to put things together?) I've tried holding off doing these things, to see if anyone else steps in, but then the group crashes to a halt. Ok, ok, whatever, I would not mind so much except that I am not graded based on how well I keep our lab group up, I am graded almost purely on my production. My group benefits me plumbing everything for them, but I lose time I could be using for production. Not cool lah.

something stressful, not sure what

When I get stressed, I feel it physically. My neck gets sore and tight as a reaction to my stress and usually I know exactly what the cause it; a big presentation, tough loving, something at work not going well etc. Well, lately my neck has been sore, but I don't know exactly what is bothering me. Since Saturday evening I've been feeling the tension. If I don't know what it's caused by, I'm not sure when things are going to calm down, and well that just stressful.

This last weekend, Hemi's mom and I took a quick trip to Key West, We started driving down in the afternoon and uggh, long drive. In the evening we arrived at Authors, a bed and breakfast. Once settled in, we walked down to the dock for the sunset.

Quite a few weird characters at the dock. Jack Sparrow, a Mystic and even a scary bushman. The most amazing however was the man who had tamed cats (check out the vid of him I found on youtube). After the cat man, we killed some time, then made our way to the Green Parrot to see Mia Borders sing. I had a little too much to drink there and got very sunburn. We went back the Authors, and I quickly fell asleep.

Next day woke up, read some comics in the news paper and ate breakfast. Bagels? Really? Yucks!! We packed our bags and made our way to rent a scooter.

Hemi's mom is the expert at scooter skillz, so I let her drive around. We stopped by Hemingway's house to see the poly dactyl cats and went by the south most US point. We ate at a Cuban restaurant, and of course took a picture next to the most awesomely named flippy floppy store ever.

In the afternoon we drove back home. Againg ughh; if you get caught behind a slow car, you are doomed to go 35mph the entire way almost. Gee whiz the sun and driving had sapped my energy from me. Well cool little weekend trip.

missed phone calls

Two annoying things compliment each other to create a super annoyance for me:

1) People don't leave phone messages when they call. People call, hear my voice mail message, then hang up. Yes, do what you like, but this behavior annoys me. And why you want to annoy me lah? I like phone messages, I mean really who truly calls people anymore, and now I don't get a cool voice mail? Not cool lah.

2) My phone will not tell me if I have a missed call. The details are sketchy, and I think it happens when someone sends me a txt msg after I have a missed call, but in short, I don't always know that some body called me. Not cool lah.

The power of these two annoying things creates the super annoying situation of this: people call, no msg, I no know, then people get mad I no call back. So annoy lah.

Last weekend I was witness to an awesome steel drum guy. Dude, this guy was drumming covers at the Fish Company restaurant in Islamorada; and from a distance, you don't even realize that this fool is 'singing' along till you get close. 'Singing'...you how Janis Joplin sings certain parts of that song "Bobby McGee" well that's exactly how this guy was singing along. He'd get the chorus right, but most the lyrics he just kinda hums around. He even sings apologies for forgetting the words. Awesomeness.

Anne Kolb Nature Center

Yesterday Hemi's mom and I went to the Anne Kolb Nature Center in Hollywood Florida. The center is inside West Lake Park, which is a cool mangrove nature reserve. When we went there, the center was pretty much empty, but looks designed well and really should be getting more play.

There is the exhibit hall, which is not awesome, but only costs $1 to get in. It is a little education exhibit with animal displays. There was a rumor there would be baby sting rays, but I saw none. I did see two fish cuddling (Lucky!).

The second attraction would be the observation tower. It overlooks the mangrove and gives a pretty good view of the park. Kinda spartan, but it serves it's purpose. You can see one view from the tower in the picture above.

The highlight is mos def the walkway over the mangrove. I can see the appeal to some people of being in nature but not getting dirty. The walkway is well built, cool crab pictures every once in a while. The mangroves themselves reminded me a lot of some parts of Melaka, Malaysia, with all the little hermit crabs running around in the mud saying what's up. I enjoyed the strange sounds and dude, I even saw a tree crab!!Mos def a cool place to check out; I will be coming back to check out the canoe possibilities.

A day of traveling. After an adios to the family, either the night before or that morning, Hemi's mom and I went to meant G-dog and L-dog at Rudy's BBQ. We talked chemistry, jobs and the such. After that I gave G-dog my bag of rocks and then we were off to airplane.

Landing in Miami, well it's nice to get home. ATX helped me recharge a bit and restore my calm. Good trip but I wish I got to see more peeps more often. Oh well, sometimes it'll be that way.

Sunday morning began with another sparring session, this time with bambam. Kinda sad, I invited all these people and only trusty bambam showed up(no pebbles, bling bling or the crow?). So actually we started off with forms. We went through basically all our old traditional Kuk sool won forms. This is nice to see someone else still practicing their forms. After maybe 20mins of forms review we decided to kickbox. Every other round I would try to change sides, and it is very obvious I have one side more developed than the other. I got a good leg kick in, but also got rocked with an uppercut. Argh, each round we got more relaxed and found are old form eventually which was good. After that, I showed bambam my secret 3 part idea I've been playing with. Finally time to go, bambam gave me some insects to eat, I gave him a comic and after some bubble tea we were out like a trout.

Around I would say maybe four p.m., hemi's mom and I went to Mozarts coffee shop. Dude ATX independent coffee shops are so nice. We met up with Somi, Badger, Squid boy 1, Starbucks, german korean and the King. I brought the insects that bambam gave me and we ate them all. In addition I brought a bag of rocks, and each person picked out a cool rock, to um, I'm not sure...I'm sure some people kept them close while other threw them into the lake when I left.

That evening we celebrated my da's b-day. He is like old dude. Cake, presents and all. This was the purpose of my visit really. Good day.

Early morning training with one of Dossom's students I call Mish mish. I've been working with Mish mish for a while on and off to improve his stand up. We sparred a bit for practice. He is getting better, but needs to work on how he deals with athletic people; those that are really fast, or really powerful. I'm not really sure how to deal with them either actually.

After that, I got home, showered, and then Hemi's mom, my sister and I drove down south to the Outlet mall. Kinda boring purse shopping lah. For a late lunch we drove to ATX for Schlotskys and then returned to my Rent's house.

In the late afternoon I went to Book People and Waterloo records: I got a book for my dad and the last Cruiserwieght CD(). Bounced back home for a quick dinner, then Hemi's mom and I went to Doc's on SOCO. I use to go here a lot and it was fun for me to revisit. We met up with Bambam, the King, Squid Boy 1 and the infamous Somi. We caught up with each other's lives. It was fun.

a dream

Friday morning I had a dream. I dream a lot but this dream was unusual in that the timing was amazing. It is too naughty to tell, but let me describe it like this:

It's like you are a track star with magic gold shoes. You want to forget the shoes for a while so you bury them for 4 years. After a year you forget about the shoes. Exactly four years later, you have a dream about the gold shoes. In your dream you go to where you buried them and going to dig them up.

After my dream, I mentally checked my calendar and was amazed. It was a spiritual experience almost, in a way I thought destiny intended me to rediscover my magic gold shoes again, and as soon as physically possible. I'm not sure if I described it well, but yeah it's like that, but in a naughty way. (You tell me yours I'll tell you mine.)

After that, I chillaxed at a cup cake/coffee shop for a little bit waiting for lunch to happen. Once lunch time happened around 12:30pm, poof I was out to meet some old coworkers (the king, emi and c-era). We ate at Pho Saigon(one of the lamest things about MIA is the lack of good AZN food).

After lunch, which went a little bit late(I may of stopped by coco's for a quick ice mocha with bubbles), I went to pick up Hemi's mom (who was not happy with her hair) then went to rent's. After some chill time, we then went to this awesome Brazilian restaurant named Rio's Brazilian cafe. This place was supers yummy. We ate with Emi, Kimpossible, Sid, and Owl Girl 1. Nice end to a day. The end.

An odd Thursday. First, we went to visit Hemi's mom's Uncle at her cousin's place for lunch. Her cousin just got married to some dude and they just moved to North Austin for San Antonio. The cousin was working in San Antonio but her husband, and father were prepping a bbq for us to eat. Anyway, how odd. After lunch and some awkward turtle conversation, we went back to the rents house. Then, Mia's cousin came to visit, on her way back from work in San Antonio. This conversation was not as awkward turtle. (Cool, done with Hemi's mom cousin and Uncle.)

After quick dinner, I went to Dossom's and Hemi's mom went to San Marcos Outlet mall with my mom. At Dossom's I played in the adult class, then talked a while with the Crow. Dossom has a thai boxe class now? Well after that I went to Genuine Joe's for a chai latte and Chicken desert. Very yummy! Off home to rents, then zz.

Day of quick travel after work. Hemi's mom and I traveled by plane to ATX. We arrived in the evening via armpit(H-town). The guy we rented our car from was from El Paso, which gave us some cool things to talk about, he recommended a restaurant named the Screaming Goat(we were later told this place was closed). When we got the rent's house I was surprised big time: my old room had been redecorated to a pimp guest bed room. Easy few hours of travel.

harry potter movies

Yesterday I saw the final Harry Potter movie. I enjoyed the conclusion a lot, but not because necessarily it was a good movie. I think it was because I followed the story and cast for seven movies and unlike other franchise movies (land before time, matrix, star wars, aliens, transformers, marvel anything, batman, et cetera) the quality of the movies remained pretty good and, more importantly, watchable.

Also, because of the amount of movies which keep continuity, you can build a rich history and complex plot. This is the first movie series I've seen this with, but sometimes television series come up with consistently good quality, long term shows (the Wire, Babylon five, Farscape). I think my allegiance changed as I watched the movie too; with the first movie everything is so black and white, but by the end everything is gray except the three main characters. Excellent series of movies.

Today's been kind of a chill day for me. I've been trying to finish up this book: Shantaram by Greg Roberts. I have 300 pages left. Yeah, I'm not all that interesting sometimes.

Moving on to my outfit: 1) I like this shirt and it's out of sync pocket. 2) Uncle Robert gave me that hat...my hair is getting long and crazy and the hat helps control the crazy. 3) The Cargo shorts hold no cargo. 4) Chicken inspired boxers.

For the rest of day I think I'm gonna read some more, send some emails and maybe taunt people by text message. This seems best. Oh, I have not checkout southpark in a while, I think I will do that too.

I've noticed people tend to run with head phones on listening to music. This may sound odd, but I don't think I've ever done that: combine exercise with headphones I mean. I think it's because I like to notice people, nature, situations, art, and things that are there as I run by. Maybe that means I'm not so focused on running.

one year in MIA

Yesterday, Hemi's mom and I got into a car and traveled 3 and 1/2 hours to see a beach. This beach is suppose to be one of the best in the United States. Was it worth the drive? In short: Yes.Actually I lied. The whole reason for the travel was to visit my friend from ATX, Emi. His family was traveling to disney world, and they caught word that this was the beach to see.This beach is soooo cool in many ways. First thing I noticed was the parking. I did not pay a nickle for parking, which is surprising; in South Florida I think I pay an average of $2.00 parking every visit. Another thing I like was the the amazing sand. Quarts I think. White, fluffy and cool on the feet. The last thing I'd like to mention is that the water is clear and clean enough to have life in it. You actually see life in the water (compared to the mirky of Hollywood beach or Surfside). Big and small fish swim by you and I even found a sand dollar!
We meant up with Emi and his family and we had some shiner bock, a good Texas beer. Good times.The part of the town we were in, Sarasota, was very touristy. That said, the beach is worth it. Overall excellent trip.

Best roach display I've seen yet!

So last week, Hemi's mom and I got a two day tickets to the Miami Zoo. The first day we started walking...this was a poor choice. Hemi's mom noticed that it was hot, so we retreated. The next day we returned with a different plan of attack. We rented a two person bike. This is the coolest way to see the zoo; you drive around all quick like, then park your bike when you want to see something. Highlights were: roach display, feeding giraffes, roach display, and awesome changling pictures.

Fairchild tropical Gardens. May/22/2011

On a hot Sunday in April, I found myself walking alone in the Fairchild Tropical Gardens. It's a cool garden in a city called Coral Gables and for about $25 you can walk inside like I did. Actually it was a lot cooler than just walking; there is a cool little trolly bus tour that takes you through some sights of the garden in about an hour, with dudes and dude-lets telling you about the plants as you pass.Dude, check out this metal man looking up at trees. Awesome!!

Cool vine walkway..and by that I mean it shelters you from the sun.

Picture of a sexy green tree; I think if people knew this plant was displayed, you'd have more visitors to the garden. Well after the trolly bus ride, I walked around a bit and took some pictures of plants and stuff. If I had someone else with me, I would of made a tree hugging album. Instead, I ended up walking off in some swamp area and getting lost for a bit. I survived so It's all good.

Like many South Florida people, some of the trees have a little ba-doomp-a-doomp. Gross!

What an odd flower...not edible?

Lizards in MIA

One of the first things I noticed when I first moved to Miami were the lizards. They are a ton. You hear about the iguanas, but no one prepared me for the amount of little lizards everywhere. I see them all over the walls sun bathing; when I jog, they scramble off the sidewalks; going to work, they fall on to my car; and at night, ghostly white geckos to crowd every out door light.

Hemi the cat has found them amusing too. The other day he found one in the apartment. When he was done, he left behind a lifeless carcass for me to find and clean up. Yum yum. All the little lizards running around probably make Miami the house cat's lizard eating capital of the US too. Mos def.

Yesterday, Hemi's mom and I went to Florida Super Comics for free comic book day. We met Beau Billingslea, the English voice of Cowboy Beebop's Jet Black. Cowboy Beebop happens to be my favorite anime, so yeah I'd say this was worth it. The free comic teaser for the Dark Crystal origin comic has me stoked. Also, some Marvel characters were chillin' around too. Also of note that night, we rode the Miami City Metro Mover. We parked in overtown, and walked three blocks though it...which was eye opening. However once we got to the street with the Metro Mover station, things were very nice. The Metro Mover, seems to work well and it reminds me a lot of the LRT in Singapore. Wow, at last I've seen something MIA does better that ATX. I definitely think they should expand it and develop the city at it's stops. Mos Def.

I feel like my to do list gets longer and longer, yet my time left on earth gets shorter and shorter. Maybe it's just to motivate me to quit more time vampires (bad social media, bad tele watching, bad friends, lame movies, internet surfing just to kill time, etc).

I remember my calculus 2 lecturer at SWT, a man named Dr. Northcutt, once said something to the likes of: you can do anything you want, but you can't do everything...you have to choose. By this he meant you have to choose what you would get good at, and leave some of your dreams behind. I would take this a step further and say that if you don't choose, and instead try to do everything, you end up doing nothing. If you try to follow every dream, you spread your focus so thin that although you may become better than average at all those things, this is not your goal.

I need to stop doing nothing.

Apartment: balcony

I feel like a balloon. A balloon who has been filled up these past months with air (skillz and know how). As a balloon I have been filling up with air to prepare, in case I need to release all my air to the world, at my test. The test came, and I wanted to empty up all the air inside me to fill the room, but instead I ended up only needing to poof out a little squirt of air. Yeah, it's like that.

I ran across this video of Transformers doing the MJ thriller dance. It is awesome once it gets started after about 1:20. 5 points for every dancing Transformer you can name...I can only get 25 points, and it bugs me that I don't know the one on the left. (no Shockwave is not dancing, but props if you can guess more than one of the Decepticon ghost.)

Yesterday, my last pair of flip flops failed me. It all started when I skillfully walked through a puddle. This made the bottom of my no longer gripping flip flops rather slippery. After the puddle, I began to walk again on dry ground, however my flip flops being wet, failed to grip and I fell. I did not look graceful, so I decided then and there that it was time for new chanclas.

Today I bought two. The black ones are for rainy days. They are bumpy and make me laugh. I shall call them "the bumpies."
The leather ones are for dry days. They are colorful and make me smile. I shall call them "the beach bums."
